Air Conditioner Types
Within the United States there are two main categories of residential air conditioners. Window or through-wall air conditioners cool a home on a room-by-room basis. While, window or through-wall air conditioners are more flexible and can potentially cut energy costs by only cooling rooms that are in-use - the initial cost of this kind of air conditioning system may be greater than central air conditioning.
Central Air Conditioning, or central air, uses ducts or pipes to distribute cool air throughout an entire home - to more than one room at a time. Additionally, central air conditioning systems have return-air ducts that pull air through a filter to remove dust, lint and other airborne particles. Some advanced air filters are capable of removing microscopic particles. Finally, central air conditioning systems have outdoor or roof compressors that do not create as much noise as a window air conditioner.
Some newer central air conditioning systems use a mini-duct, high velocity technology. These air conditioning systems use small flexible hoses that have air forced through them at a high velocity. This technology is great for homes or businesses where the major renovations of traditional ducts are unfeasible. This small tubing and high velocity air also reduces the risk of dust and dirt build-up in the ducts.
While a thermostat may handle both the heating and air conditioning of a home or business, in most cases there are two separate heating and cooling units that share the thermostat (and duct, ventilation and filter systems).
Green Air Conditioning
Within the United States, the energy efficiency of an air conditioner is often determined by the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, or SEER rating. With the SEER rating system, the higher the SEER rating, the more energy efficient the air conditioning system is.
Insulation is another effective way to reduce the energy cost associated with air conditioning. When a thermostat is set to "kick in" at a certain temperature, the more natural elements available to keep a home or business cool, the better. These "natural elements" can include curtains, blinds, ceiling fans, thick exterior walls, and reflective roofing. Even trees located near a home or business providing shade to a window or wall can help a home or building stay naturally cool and keep down the energy cost of the air conditioning system.
